Project Description: This documentary is a high-spirited film with an urgent message. Hosted by Jeff Bridges, with an eclectic sound track, featuring popular jazz and rock groups. The Film will chronicle the expedition and cover the environmental issues regarding the coastline and beaches of the state of California,. the destruction of marine life, and the health effects associated with contact with ocean waters. It will include information on the causes of urban runoff pollution and proposes various specific solutions to stemming the flow of contaminants from our city streets into the ocean.
Coastal Dreams includes points of views from scientists, biologists, oceanographers, environmentalists, development advocates, coastal farmers, agricultural business organizations, politicians, native Americans, fishermen, surfers, divers, and various other ocean enthusiasts It will contrast the sights, sounds, and the majestic beauty of the California coastline with the endangered ecosystems and wildlife set against the backdrop of California’s burgeoning cities, with an ever increasing population which now stands at over 35 million people and growing.
The film concludes with examples of a number of successful preservation solutions achieved by local and statewide groups of ocean activists. The film also follows the expedition team as they complete the journey of 1100 miles and reach their final destination at the Mexican border. The film also shows the great coastal places of California in a fresh, dynamic, and entertaining way.
The film will make a strong impact on efforts towards the health and the preservation of the beaches and coastal waters of California, which will hopefully serve a reminder that we all must share and accept responsibility for the future health and protections of our coastal waters. The film will put an emphasis on the critical connection between the natural state of the coast and the imprint of humanity’s impact upon it. The film will educate, honor, and expose the wonderment of our coast and hopefully inspire anyone to be an active participant in keeping our beaches and oceans safe for future generations and in the process discover their own coastal dreams.
The film will follow the progress of the expedition team and reveal the results of ongoing daily research, such as testing the waters for bacteria levels and posting the results of their findings as a daily log on the onboard website. The film will feature informative interviews on location, as well as incredible paddling and surfing action as the athletes work their way down the coast. The film will highlight, identify, and address water pollution issues unique to each area we come to as we journey down along the coastline. The film strives to be an entity and a positive force in the continued battle for the conservation of California’s coasts and beaches.
The film will be more widely seen than many environmental films because it will have the adventure of the expedition while addressing coastal pollution issues and provide insights about the connection between the oceans natural environment and the impact of modern day man.
The film will convey the declining numbers of fish stocks, the effect of pollution on fisheries, wildlife, coastal marches and wetlands, along with interviews of prominent scientists throughout California. We will also include opposing points of view by featuring interviews with corporate builders, developers, and agricultural lobbyists.
The audience is the general public. We do not yet have a distributor for this film, but because of the high profile nature of this ongoing issue, the quality of the program, and the fact that it is hosted by Jeff Bridges (the actor who has been nominated for four Academy Awards) we anticipate an even larger audience. If the film is chosen for Sundance it will likely attract national and international attention. There is the added ingredient of the growing worldwide interest in surfing (take a look at corporate advertising) and the recent success of documentary films such as Stacey Peralta’s “Riding Giants” and Dana Brown’s “Step Into Liquid”.
However, we anticipate an even larger audience for some of the following reasons: The need for an entertaining and informative film about the coastal marine environment and clean beaches. The high profile nature of the urban runoff pollution issue. The fact that citizens not just in California, but around the country, feel a loss at the destruction of our coastal environment and the contamination of our beaches. The high quality of the project. The soundtrack by popular musicians. Host Jeff Bridges
The film crew and the expedition team will embark on their journey on or before April 1, 2005. We are currently accepting applications for corporate sponsorships which will attract those interested in product placement and advertising opportunities in association with the expedition/film.
